Three with nothing to lose

Michael De Santa is a former bank robber, retired in witness protection and slowly going mad from boredom in a mansion with a family who hates him. Franklin Clinton is a guy from Strawberry who flogs cars to pay off debts and dreams of escaping the neighborhood. Trevor Philips is Michael's former partner, a psychopath with a trailer park in the desert and a complete lack of brakes.

Their stories intertwine into one, and you can switch between the three at any time, right in the middle of free play: the camera soars above the city and descends to where the hero is going about his business. This technique, which hadn't been attempted before at the time of release, transformed the narrative from a linear chain of missions into a living painting.

Los Santos and all of Blaine County

The map includes not only a parody of Los Angeles but also an entire county surrounding it: deserts, the Chiliad Mountains, forests, a coastline, and a scuba-diving seabed. The city lives by its own schedule — traffic jams, parties in Vinewood, homeless people under bridges, street racers, police raids. There are so many activities that it's easy to abandon the plot: tennis, golf, yoga, hunting, skydiving, a stock market that realistically reacts to the player's actions.

Robbery as a separate genre

Major operations are built in several stages: reconnaissance, choosing an approach, recruiting a team, and the operation itself. Mercenaries vary in experience and price — a cheap driver can ruin a getaway, while an expensive hacker can give you extra minutes in the vault. The same payout can be made quietly or with a bang, and the consequences of each approach vary.

Why Legacy?

In March 2025, Rockstar released the Enhanced edition with ray tracing on PC, renaming the original version Legacy and keeping it alive as a separate branch with its own updates. This choice was deliberate: all the modifications accumulated over the years were written for Legacy, and Enhanced is not fully compatible with them. Plus, the requirements are significantly more modest, so the game runs on older hardware where the updated version struggles. It's no coincidence that Legacy regularly has more players on Steam than the more technically advanced edition.
