Not just textures

The remaster could easily be reduced to a tweaked lighting, but the studio went further. The combat system, enemy behavior, animations, camera, skill tree, Roach controls, and interface were all overhauled. Eleven years later, the developers have set about fixing exactly what players have been complaining about all along: the clumsy Geralt, the capricious horse, and combat that became routine after three hundred hours.

The graphics have also received attention, including path tracing, modern scaling technologies, a more detailed and rich world, and a new photo mode.

Both expansions are included in the base game.

Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are now included in the main game and do not require separate purchase. For those who only completed the base story, this is a reason to return: Blood and Wine is still considered the benchmark for what a story expansion should be, and Toussaint surpasses half of all full-fledged games in terms of detail per square meter.

Old saves remain compatible, so you can continue a long-abandoned playthrough right from where it left off.

White Wolf and his last case

The story itself hasn't changed, and there was no need to change it. Geralt of Rivia searches for Ciri, hunted by the Wild Hunt, and along the way, he deals with monsters, the politics of the Northern Kingdoms, and the people who often prove more terrifying than the monsters. Nilfgaard is advancing, Velen is drowning in mud and corpses, Novigrad is seething with witch hunts — a world that, even today, is rarely surpassed in its density and persuasiveness.

What's next

Along with the remaster, the studio teased the new expansion, "Ballads of the Past," which will be released in 2027—the first story expansion for the game in over a decade. It's being developed by Fool's Theory, the same studio responsible for the remake of the first "Witcher." So for many, the remaster will be more than just a refresher, but also preparation for a return to the Northern Kingdoms.
