Gears of War 4

Gears of War 4 opens a new trilogy in the series. Set 25 years after the defeat of the Locust, the main character is James Dominic Fenix, Marcus's son. The game was developed by The Coalition, the studio that took over Gears of War from Epic Games.

The world after the war

Sera is trying to move on with her life. The COG has built fortress cities and guards them with "Dibs" robots, while those who refuse to live by the government's rules have fled to the Outsider settlements. JD Fenix, a former military officer, deserted and now lives among the Outsiders with his friend Del Walker. Alongside them is Kait Diaz, a girl from the settlement. One night, unknown creatures kidnap the entire village, including Kait's mother. Seeking answers, the trio turns to an aging Marcus, and discovers that the Locust haven't disappeared, but have transformed into something new called the Swarm.

A storm in the midst of battle

Shooting from behind cover remains the signature style, with the Lancer and chainsaw still in place, but new enemies and new environments have been added. Swarms grab fighters and drag them away, small creatures rush in packs, and COG robots behave completely differently than living opponents. Windstorms have become a key part of combat: gusts knock players off their feet, change the course of projectiles, and can destroy cover. The campaign can be played with two players, including on a single screen.

Horde and multiplayer

Horde mode has become more in-depth. Players choose a class with its own abilities, and the Fabricator allows them to build fortifications and turrets between waves. The competitive portion features classic modes and new ones, like "Knockout," where killing an enemy brings a fallen ally back into the fight.
