Ashikai is a dark, isometric action RPG featuring brutal samurai duels, where everything revolves around precise strikes, parries, and constant enemy pressure. Instead of chaotic hack-and-slash combat, the game forces you to carefully read your opponent's movements, seize brief windows of opportunity, and quickly change tempo, as a prolonged mistake can easily turn into a deadly series of blows. The world of feudal Japan is grimy, disturbing, and long-broken: villages are deserted, armed gangs control the roads, and yokai and other monsters increasingly appear in the ruins.
Aggression is quickly punished here.
Enemies are constantly moving, moving out of the line of fire, interrupting attacks, and trying to overwhelm you with sheer numbers. A normal group of enemies can corner you faster than a boss if their formation isn't broken in time. This forces you to keep an eye on not just one enemy but the entire situation around you: who's flanking you, who's trying to disrupt your timing, and who's waiting for the perfect moment to land the finishing blow. The game constantly keeps you on your toes and prevents fights from devolving into pointless exchanges of blows.
Katanas here feel like a fully-fledged part of the gameplay style, not just a new piece of equipment. One blade allows for rapid range closing and pressure with speed, another emphasizes heavy strikes and high critical damage, and some variants completely change the approach to survival with health leeching or elemental effects. The faction system further influences the gameplay: supporting the yakuza, ronin, or other forces gradually changes the world's attitude toward Shinro and opens up new consequences for the entire journey.
