Dungeons of Aether – a turn-based roguelike with dice-based combat, released on February 28, 2023. It was created by Nikita Belorusov, aka ampersandbear, from Aether Studios, the creators of the fighting game Rivals of Aether. The universe is the same, but instead of reaction speed, it's all about calculation and the ability to deal with randomness.
Cubes instead of reaction
Each encounter is based on dice rolls. You work with what you roll, so you have to rethink your plan on the fly and make the most of even a bad roll. The player sets the pace; no one rushes, but the difficulty is high: one decision leads deeper into the dungeon, another ends the run early. There are four locations: the Julesvale Mines, the Fire Caves, the Underground Oasis, and the Crystal Deposits.
Four heroes
The characters differ markedly in style. Flit considers herself the protector of Julesvale, though many see her as more of a hindrance. She's well-balanced and best suited to settling in. Hamir, a former Guardian of the Wall, takes a beating and waits for the right moment to respond. Pirate Slade, from the Polekai Islands, seeks a rare mineral to save his homeland and relies on speed and evasion. Artemis, the Flame Mora general, arrived on a secret mission from Emperor Loxodon and can heal in combat.
History and clean runs
In the story mode, you can return to the surface town at any time from the dungeon, talk to the villagers, and spend gold on preparations. Secret diary pages are scattered throughout the levels, which tell the story of Julesvale. Dungeon mode is more challenging: everything is randomly generated, you must complete all locations in a single run, and gold is added to the leaderboard at the finish. The game is less than 100 MB, so download it. Dungeons of Aether You can use a torrent on any PC, even a very old one.
