Tunnels of Despair – a first-person survival horror game from indie developer BearFighterDev, released on March 16, 2018. The action takes place underground, in long-abandoned subway tunnels, from which the protagonist must find a way out.

A collapse and a door ahead

The premise is brief. The hero is sent to check the condition of a tunnel that has long been closed. During the inspection, the roof collapses, and he barely manages to take refuge in a small side room. The way back is blocked, his belongings are left behind the rubble, and the only way forward is through the door. All the equipment he brought with him is lost behind the rubble. From this point on, he must rely solely on what he can find along the way, moving deeper into the tunnels.

Food, water and close combat

Survival here is simple but constant. You need to monitor your hunger and thirst and pick up any edible items you come across. Combat in the game is close quarters, so you have to get up close and personal with your enemies. The hero isn't alone below: enemies roam the tunnels, and zombies are among the game's markers for a reason. Enemies' routes are random, so they might encounter you in a completely different place on your next attempt. It's often better to wait it out or go around them than to engage in combat, and the game also includes stealth elements for this purpose.

Several paths to the top

There are multiple paths to escape: the game offers several different options, and the exit depends on where you turn and what you find. The tunnels are dark and cramped, with abandoned trains along the way, and the atmosphere is one of silence and anticipation.
