Vessels of Decay – a pixelated action game with RPG elements about two sisters in post-apocalyptic Scandinavia. Developed by Simon Jakobsson and Aurora Punks, published by Headup, the game was released on June 19, 2025.

Sisters among the ruins

The main characters, Mad and Frey, were born after the collapse of the previous civilization. Its ruins are overgrown with forest, nature has reclaimed the cities, and ancient creatures have risen from the dust, claiming these lands as their own. The sisters make their way through the ruins, piecing together what happened here, and along the way, the plot takes several twists. Leisurely, melancholy exploration alternates with fast-paced combat, and it is this contrast that drives the game's pace.

Monsters from northern fairy tales

Enemies are drawn from Scandinavian folklore, and combat with them requires careful consideration. You choose your combat style, and defeated enemies unlock new skills. There are stunning blows and finishing animations. Bosses are fought in several phases, and simply clicking them won't defeat them: you need to pay attention to their attacks and respond promptly. Viewed from above, levels progress linearly, with occasional puzzles between fights.

Pixel decay

All graphics are hand-drawn in a pixelated style, and the theme of decay is evident in every location: the remnants of a highly developed society are reduced to ruins, overgrown by nature. Players compare the combat to games like Dark Souls, only in two dimensions. The game has lightweight requirements, requiring 2GB of RAM and about 350MB of disk space.
