Shoot 'em up, or shmup, is a genre where you control a ship or a hero and shoot waves of enemies while moving through a self-scrolling level. You need to dodge projectiles, collect power-ups, and defeat enormous bosses. The genre originated in arcades and is still alive and well, from classics to modern indies.
Questions
How is shmup different from "bullet hell"?"Bullet Hell" is the most challenging shoot-em-up, where the screen is filled with bullets. Regular shoot-em-ups are calmer and a good introduction to the genre.
