2013 brought colossal destruction to the world, killing countless people and rendering the Earth uninhabitable, as life is simply impossible in radioactive conditions. However, not everything is so grim, as there are survivors, who found shelter in the subway. Deprived of sun and fresh air, but alive!

Thirty years have passed since then. During this time, the survivors have had children, the metro has been developed like cities, but the rivalry remains — everyone strives to survive, even at the expense of the other. And as a not-so-good twist, various mutants have begun to infiltrate from Earth, using humans as a food source.

The protagonist, Artyom, is one of those born on Earth but raised underground. Having learned of a danger that could destroy humanity's last refuge, Artyom considers it his duty to inform everyone else, though to do so, he must traverse a difficult path to the very heart of the metro.

The new project, Metro 2033 Redux, challenges players to experience the finale. The game was created using a state-of-the-art engine. This has significantly improved the graphics, including improved lighting and physics, and the ability to experience changing weather.

The Moscow metro in the game is a rather atmospheric place, and has changed significantly compared to previous versions.
"The apocalypse is interestingly depicted as it would be in Russia, for real — without the piles of weapons that appeared out of nowhere, or the newfangled gadgets manufactured in factories that somehow survived. No, it's just like it would be in real life — you're given a gas mask and a homemade weapon, and that's all the gadgets you'll have to fight with."

- Players are offered to choose one of the proposed playstyles – "Survival" or "Spartan", which does not change the goal, but affects the progression of the game.
