Suffer The Night

Suffer The Night – a first-person horror game from Tainted Pact, published by Assemble Entertainment, released on April 17, 2023. The main twist here is that the terrifying story unfolds in two locations at once: the hero's house and inside a text-based game on an old floppy disk.

Envelope after a thunderstorm

The action takes place in 1989 in the town of Sleepy Woods. A powerful storm rages overhead, lightning strikes near the house, and then an envelope appears on the doorstep. Inside is a floppy disk and an unsigned note asking you not to play the game but to burn and destroy it. Naturally, you do. The entire setting is reminiscent of the late 1980s, and the horror is built on retro horror nostalgia: floppy disks, flickering text, night, and a storm outside.

Dungeon from the text

The floppy disk contains a text-based dungeon crawler with dark scenes and detailed descriptions. You progress through it by typing commands on the keyboard, like in old-school text adventures. The story on the disk gradually spills off the screen: the deeper you descend into Mr. Tops' world, the more strange things happen in the room around you. The lower levels of this game contain monstrous creatures, and encounters with them are described with no softening.

Pale man in the house

The one who planted the floppy disk isn't standing idly by. A pale figure makes itself known every now and then during the game, and you must react to its appearances or face consequences. Therefore, sitting glued to the monitor is impossible: you have to simultaneously monitor the text and what's happening behind you.
