The Japanese novel follows a story in which a young man named Makoto Ito becomes the object of affection for several women. The original story contains erotic scenes, so the game is rated 18+. Later versions have been cleaned up, making it accessible to all ages. The player's primary objective is to read dialogue and choose the actions their character will take, creating dialogue for the game's plot. The ending depends on the actions chosen and can vary; the developers have provided numerous possible endings.

The player's actions in the animated story are kept to a minimum. The character must read and choose actions, then observe the plot's development. A total of 21 possible endings are possible. Most are positive, with only three negative ones. The plot revolves around Makoto Ito, who falls in love with a shy girl. While trying to bring them closer, several other female characters from his school also fall in love with him. Makoto must choose who he wants to be with. His actions and conversations can increase or decrease his love for different girls. A manga and anime adaptation of the game were later created.

Bright, vibrant graphics and a pleasant musical score made the game a market leader in Asia, and then globally.
