Mountain Home is an atmospheric adventure about a monk who journeys through a cursed valley, performing rituals and trying to maintain inner peace amidst spirits, demons, and human suffering. Instead of a traditional combat system, the game emphasizes the hero's own state of mind: it's not the strength of a weapon that matters, but the ability to withstand the fear, madness, and heavy emotions that permeate these lands.
Poetry is needed here not for beauty, but for survival.
During his wanderings, the monk seeks out rare moments of peace: a blossoming cherry blossom, a new moon, clouds over the mountains, or quiet corners of nature amidst a devastated world. Such places inspire the hero to create tanka — classical Japanese verses. They help him maintain peace of mind and continue his journey through lands filled with suffering and curses.
Rituals require preparation and attention. Before exorcising a demon, you must investigate the cause of its appearance, study related objects, find prayers, and understand what exactly is holding the spirit in this world. Some entities are bound to specific locations, while others require special conditions for the ritual. Because of this, the game is constantly built around exploration, observation, and attempts to understand the pain of others, rather than simply "cleansing" another area.
