Before I Go – a dark Metroidvania with precise platforming from indie studio J's Labratory, released on April 13, 2026. It's an allegory about coming to terms with death: the protagonist embodies the innocence of the inner child, and the ending, as the creators directly state, is inevitable.
Sick old world
The game's world is old and sick. After a terrible catastrophe, living beings have weakened, withdrawn, and are unable to resist despair. This paralyzing fear is contagious, but it hasn't touched a small child. The protagonist is lost in limbo and must cross over to another world, find answers, face his fear, and accept reality. The plot is told without direct explanation, through images and an atmosphere that oscillates between melancholy and surrealism.
Jumping without the right to make mistakes
Mechanics-wise, this is a classic side-scroller with a few fresh ideas. Handcrafted platforming sections are designed for precise jumps, and the controls are tuned to immediately indicate a missed jump. Parasitic creatures, hostile to all living things, are a nuisance. As the game progresses, the hero gains powerful abilities that expand their capabilities and open paths to previously inaccessible places. The difficulty is high, as reflected in players' Steam ratings.
Connected World
The world is nonlinear and interconnected: locations flow into each other, and you can explore them in different orders. The graphics are 2.5D, viewed from the side; the developers recommend playing with a gamepad. The soundtrack is sold separately. Low requirements: Core i5-2300, 4 GB of memory, GTX 660.
