Heat or Die – a short first-person survival horror game from indie studio Mounpeak Games, released on July 31, 2025. You're lost in a vast, snowy forest, where both the frost and the Wendigo are on your heels.
Fire as the only defense
Warmth is the most important resource here. Without it, the hero quickly freezes, and going without fire for long in this forest is fatal. Fire also works against the monster: as long as the torch burns, the Wendigo keeps its distance. The problem is, the torch goes out. Then you need to find matches, start a fire, and then relight the torch from there. If the light goes out and there's nothing to relight, the only option is to lie low and remain silent, as the monster relies on sound.
Partner's missiles
You're not completely alone. Somewhere in the forest, there's a companion who's sending out flares to show you where to go. You have to plot a route using these flares, remembering to look for matches along the way. There are no save points in the game, and there's no second attempt halfway through. Each playthrough is slightly different, so memorizing the route doesn't guarantee success. A single attempt takes between 15 minutes and an hour, and longer if the survival process drags on.
Don't shout into the microphone
The most unusual detail: the game listens to your actual microphone. Wendigo will also hear a loud scream of fear, a conversation in the room, or a sharp noise near the computer. Considering the game includes jump scares, maintaining silence can be challenging. The name might easily confuse the game with Dig or Die or the Martian strategy game from 34BigThings, but it has nothing in common with them.
