Maike was born into the noble von Essen family, once considered one of the wealthiest. But after a series of unfortunate decisions, her family suffered financial ruin. Desperate to regain their position, her parents tried to marry their daughter off to a self-made businessman.

Maike has no feelings for Walter, but her mother is determined to secure a profitable marriage. It seems there's no way out of this engagement, but then bandits attack Maike's carriage as she travels through the forest. Her parents are killed, and Maike herself flees with her maid. Seeking refuge, they discover a mysterious, dilapidated castle. What will they find inside?
