DDI Rally Championship – arcade rally racing from the small studio Dangerous Derk Interactive, released in early access on January 13, 2024. The developers were inspired by 1990s arcade games, and it's immediately apparent: there's no career path; you just pick a track, a car, and go.
Like in an arcade
There's no garage with hundreds of settings or a six-month season calendar. The game is designed for short runs, after which you'll want to immediately start a new one and shave off a few more seconds. For a truly retro experience, there's a CRT screen effect that makes the game look like an old computer monitor. You can jump in and drive without a lengthy learning curve; the developers explicitly state that the game shouldn't feel like work. The time of day and weather change, so the same track feels different during the day than in the rain.
Routes and modes
The game currently features five cars and five tracks: mountain roads, forest sections, and a desert. There are three modes. In the championship, you drive a series of stages and compete for the final spot; in the time trial, you race against the clock, and practice is essential to mastering the turns without the pressure. Leaderboards are available for the championship and time trials, showing how you compare to other players. There's also a unique feature: a separate island playground where you can simply drive without a goal.
Steering wheel and gamepad
The game works well with both a gamepad and a steering wheel. The wheel has force feedback, the controller has vibration, and the buttons are remappable. CPU and memory requirements are modest, but the developers specify a GTX 1070 for the graphics card.
