Stronghold: Definitive Edition – a remaster of the original Stronghold from 2001 by FireFly Studios, released on November 7, 2023. It's still the same mix of real-time strategy and castle simulator, only with updated graphics, re-recorded audio, and new campaigns on top of the old ones.

Rat, Pig, Snake and Wolf

The plot is classic: England is ravaged by war, the lords have betrayed the king, and the country is falling apart. You face four villains with telling nicknames: the Rat, the Boar, the Snake, and the Wolf. Each has its own style of warfare, and their castles are built differently. Both original campaigns, military and economic, are present, with 26 missions. In some, you need to break sieges and storm enemy walls, while in others, the main goal is to improve the economy, fill the treasury, and feed the people.

What's added in the re-release?

A new 14-mission story campaign was written by studio co-founders Simon Bradbury and Eric Ouellette. In it, you search for Sir Longarm's kidnapped niece in the devastated English countryside, once again encountering the Rat and the Snake along the way. There's also the "Castle Trail": ten separate sieges based on famous real-life fortresses. The graphics were recreated by the original game's artists, Robert Euvino's music was re-arranged, and the original voice actors re-recorded their lines.

How is it different from Crusader and Stronghold 2?

The Definitive Edition remains a remaster of the original game, with European castles and a focus on economics. Stronghold Crusader moves the war to the Middle East, where deserts, oases, and skirmishes with AI lords are more prominent, while Stronghold 2 is a fully 3D game with a different economic system.
