Chasm: The Rift

Chasm: The Rift – a classic first-person shooter from Kyiv-based studio Action Forms, first released in 1997. An updated version from General Arcade and publisher SNEG was released on Steam on October 10, 2022, featuring 4K support, remastered audio, and translation into twelve languages.

Gaps in time

It all begins with a mutant attack, which the hero barely manages to fend off. It then becomes clear that time conduits have opened in the Earth's atmosphere, transforming ordinary creatures into otherworldly beasts. The objective is simple and straightforward for a 1990s shooter: navigate the time corridors, kill everything you encounter, and close the conduits before the planet descends into nightmare. The levels are structured as interconnected multi-story arenas, with enemies attacking from all sides.

Dismemberment and a saw gun

Chasm was once considered one of the most technologically advanced shooters, and its main feature remains. Monsters can be blown apart, and even a crippled enemy doesn't give up and continues to attack. The game's weaponry is most often remembered for its signature sawgun. The developers were especially proud of the environments: water, rain, snow, wind, smoke, dust, sparks, explosions, and distant flashes, with changing weather throughout the levels. The publisher calls it the first Eastern European boomer shooter.

Not to be confused with Chasm

There's also just Chasm on the site, but that's a completely different game, a 2D Metroidvania from 2018. Chasm: The Rift It remains an old-school shooter: fast-paced fire, intricate levels, and plenty of blood, earning it an 18+ rating.
