Critters for Sale

Critters for Sale – a surreal point-and-click horror visual novel from indie studio Sonoshee, released on June 3, 2021. The game is comprised of five short stories, drawn in 1-bit pixel art, and inspired by the eerie folk tales of the Middle East and North Africa.

Five episodes

The episodes are called "Snake," "Goat," "Monkey," "Dragon," and "Spider," and can be played in any order. Each one transports you to a different place and time. There's a garden in near-Earth orbit, aliens from Neptune, Paranoids from neighboring timelines, and the inhabitants of the Palace of Reincarnation. The themes are consistent: time travel, black magic, immortality. You take turns playing as characters who have left their mark on the hidden history of the world, and over all the stories looms a sinister cosmic force that seeks to destroy both the hero and everything around them.

To survive or not

Every choice determines whether the character survives until the end of the episode. Each has multiple endings, and a mistake often means death, depicted without reserve: decapitation, burning, strangulation. The developers themselves warn about such scenes, although the monochrome pixelated imagery significantly softens the impact. If the hero manages to survive, they can impact the overall plot. This makes episodes tempting to replay to see different outcomes.

Noir and black humor

Despite the darkness, the text has plenty of dark humor, and the mood is more psychedelic dialogue-driven noir than a horror game with running and chases.
