WORLD OF HORROR

WORLD OF HORROR – a roguelite RPG in the space horror genre from Polish developer Pawel Kozmiński (panstasz), published by Ysbryd Games and PLAYISM. The game entered early access in February 2020, and the full version was released on October 19, 2023. All graphics are single-bit, black and white, and drawn entirely in MS Paint.

Shiokawa wakes up

The story takes place in the Japanese town of Shiokawa, where the Old Gods have returned. Inexplicable things are happening in hospitals, abandoned classrooms, quiet apartments, and dark forests, and residents are losing their minds one by one. You take on one of fourteen characters, each with their own path, and try to figure out what's happening before the town goes completely mad. The author is open about his inspirations: Junji Ito and H. P. Lovecraft, and many of the monsters look like they've stepped straight out of Ito's manga.

Secrets and chance encounters

There are twenty mysteries in the game, and you choose which ones to investigate. Each investigation is made up of random encounters, clues, puzzles, and dark rituals. Most mysteries can be resolved in multiple ways, but you still need to survive to reach the finale. Combat is turn-based and brutal, with mistakes costing you dearly and death ending your run. The deck of event cards can be collected and reworked, making each playthrough unique.

Pixels and chiptune

The one-bit graphics look simple, but horrific scenes of mutilation are common, and the developers explicitly warn about this. The game is accompanied by a disturbing chiptune soundtrack. It has won several awards for its visual style, including IndieCade 2023. Mod support is available. Installation:
1. Unzip the archive (the main thing is that the path to the game folder does not contain Cyrillic characters).
2. Launch the game.
