Nightmare of Decay – a short first-person horror game from the indie studio Checkmaty, released on May 3, 2022. The game is noticeably reminiscent of the first Resident Evil: an estate, zombies, keys, and a shortage of ammo, only you see it all through the eyes of the hero, not through fixed cameras.
Night in a stranger's estate
The hero goes to bed in his own home and wakes up locked in a large multi-story mansion. It all begins in the courtyard, and the first person to speak to you is a cat. Further along the corridors, zombies roam, cultists with pistols roam, and even more dangerous creatures are encountered. Some enemies inhabit only certain rooms, and in the flooded part of the house, the dead hide right under the water. Sounds here act as clues: groans and footsteps reveal who's waiting around the corner.
Cartridges count
The arsenal starts with a knife and a pistol, then a shotgun and a few other weapons appear. Ammunition is scarce, and healing is also scarce, so every extra shot can come back to haunt you later. Some enemies are best avoided. There's no autosave: you can only save in specific rooms, and upon death, the game sends you to the title screen, forcing you to repeat everything you've done since your last save.
Old school
The graphics are deliberately designed for the PlayStation 2 era, with angular models and murky textures. Scattered throughout the house are keys and small puzzles that unlock new wings of the estate. Completion takes about three hours, with the difficulty spiking sharply in places. The requirements are very modest — two gigabytes of memory is sufficient, so download the torrent. Nightmare of Decay You can even use it on an old PC.
