Dead Space 2 — a sci-fi horror from Visceral Games, which many still consider the best installment in the series. A city-station on a moon of Saturn, a new outbreak of necromorphs, and an engineer who is no longer just a victim but a man ready to fight back.

A city instead of a ship

While the first game locked the player in the corridors of a single starship, here the action shifts to Sprawl — a massive station on Titan, built on the wreckage of a satellite. It's an entire city with residential areas, shops, schools, a Unitologist church, and a transportation network. And that's precisely why the outbreak here feels especially terrifying: necromorphs appear where ordinary people lived just yesterday.

A nightmare inside my head

Isaac Clarke awakens with no memories of the past three years. His mind is shattered by his encounter with the Obelisk, and hallucinations become part of the game: the dead Nicole appears at the most unexpected moments, and sometimes it's difficult to tell what's real. Isaac must fight both the monsters outside and the madness within, and the latter adversary is sometimes more terrifying than the former.

Engineer's tools

Isaac is still not a soldier, but an engineer, and his weapons are mostly modified work tools. The iconic plasma cutter has been augmented with new ways to slice up necromorphs, and stasis slows enemies and machinery, allowing him to gain precious seconds. Equipment and weapons can be upgraded at workbenches, and in outer space and zero-gravity environments, Isaac moves freely using his suit's thrusters.

Nothing extra on the screen

There's no interface in the traditional sense: the health bar is a glowing ridge on the suit's back, and inventory, maps, and messages appear as holographic projections right in the game world. This is one of the reasons why the atmosphere is so captivating. Critics particularly praised the sound, level design, and gameplay itself, and the story continued in Dead Space 3.
